Framing Your Photographs is Fundamental

How we utilize our frame is as important as composition. Perhaps more so.

Framing your photographs is fundamental to your success as a photographer. And to your message as an image maker.

We create relationships, language and message through what we choose to place inside our camera frame. And by what we choose to crop out. By what elements we choose to contain together and how we juxtapose them.

Square, rectangular, vertical… Leaving out what muddies our message while including only what works is our power and defines our message.

Look. Really look. Take the time to consider your frame.

Become frame aware one exposure at a time.

I fully discovered this while pursuing professional product photography and editorial work. Things like vertical versus horizontal photographs and where type or another image could be inserted while showing the product off. How would the magazine’s banner work with an image created for the cover. Or the cover of an annual report. Important pieces to consider toward making a successful image to the delight of my clients!
